COMMEMORATION OF THE CENTENARY OF WWI
A beautiful service of reflection to commemorate the centenary of WWI was held in the United Benefice church of St George’s, Anstey, on Sunday 3rd August 2014. A number of Hormead parishioners attended and Cllr Teresa Marks and the Parish Clerk, Colin Marks, represented the Parish Council.
The Council received an email from Narelle Milligan in NSW, Australia which read:
I wish to join you at this time to think of the sacrifice Great Hormead men made by volunteering to fight for England during the First World War. Four of my ancestors, the Spicers, were killed in the service of their country. I haven’t yet worked out the exact relationship to us in Australia but it is particularly poignant to reflect on how their deaths impacted on the village, their families and friends. Lest we forget.
Parishioners quickly responded with information and photographs, which we forwarded to Narelle. The following photographs of the splendid and very special commemoration at the memorial were taken over the Centenary weekend, and are a selection of those kindly provided by Len Rogers and James Bruxner.
Names of men killed in WWI and remembered on the memorial are John Brett, Charles Bull,
John Canning, George Spicer, Walter Spicer, William Spicer, William Spicer Junior, John Tolft, Alfred Webb, Francis Wick, Walter George Cook, Ernest Joseph Myall, Frederick Hummerstone, George Percy Hummerstone, Walter Charles Hummerstone
REMEMBRANCE DAY SERVICE, Sunday 9th November 2014
The Parish Remembrance Day service was held this year at the Benefice Church of St Mary’s, Brent Pelham. Parish Council Chairman, Cllr John Kilby, laid a wreath on behalf of the Parish Council in thankful remembrance of the men of this parish who gave their lives as the ultimate sacrifice in the world wars of the last century. The children of Hormead Primary School conducted their own service of remembrance at Great Hormead War Memorial on the morning of Friday 7th November when they laid 100 poppies to commemorate the WWI centenary. They were joined in the laying of a hand-made Community Wreath with 100 poppies, and a wreath from the British Legion.
